THE YOUNG SONGWRITER 2022 COMPETITION
The Song Academy Young Songwriter 2022 competition is open for entries from the 1st February to the 31st March, from young people around the world aged 8-18.
It’s a golden opportunity for your pupils who are already writing songs to get their songs heard & connect with other talented young songwriters. Plus it’s a perfect opportunity to encourage your budding writers & musicians who’ve never written a song before, to get creative and write their first song! Collaborations between pupils are welcome as well as solo entries.
Many previous entrants have said that being part of the inspiring Young Songwriter community has made a big difference to their confidence, self-belief & motivation to achieve their full potential.
With judges including Tom Odell, Miranda Cooper, Plested, Calum Scott & Tom Grennan plus fantastic prizes, including a recording studio session and Yamaha equipment worth £1,000, this year is set to be bigger than ever!
Please have a look at our songwriting resources for Teachers further down this page. Our original instrumental tracks in each genre of music are ideal tools for pupils to improvise their lyrics & melodies. They will also broaden their knowledge of different musical styles.
It costs £10 to enter a song (to cover judging and admin costs). To enter you need the song lyrics and an mp3 file of the song (file size under 10MB). Entries can be submitted via the button below. Each pupil can enter up to 5 songs. Solo and group/band entries welcome. For solo entries you can have a friend sing the vocals. Ideally songs should be under 3.5 minutes, but they can be longer. Songs can be recorded/produced on a phone, home studio set up or professional studio. It doesn’t matter how songs are recorded as we’re looking for the craft of songwriting. There are many exclusive opportunities available for Young Songwriter 2022 entrants during the competition period.
We can invoice Schools for pupils’ entries that they are funding. Please send an email to contact@songacademy.co.uk with any questions about The Young Songwriter 2022 competition or our songwriting programmes in schools.
WHAT IS SONG ACADEMY?
What is Song Academy? Founded 13 years ago, Song Academy was built for young creators aged 8-18. Our mission is to help every child, from all backgrounds, find their voice and find their tribe, through writing their own original songs at a formative time of their life. Our unique focus on the craft of songwriting, creating lyrics and music, enables young people to express themselves powerfully and be heard. Song Academy nurtures the next generation of creative leaders (young writers, artists, musicians, producers & creative thinkers) who will be shaping the future. We run songwriting clubs, holiday workshops, song feedback reports, birthday parties, bespoke songwriting sessions and The Young Songwriter competition.
What difference is Song Academy making? Song Academy is a force for good, nurturing the next generation of creative leaders. Inspiring young people to express themselves and share their songs is having a positive impact on their well-being, self-belief, self-esteem, confidence, creativity, social skills and motivation to achieve their full potential.
“With so much going on in the world, it’s never been more vital for young people to be able to channel their energy and emotions into something positive, which is what The Young Songwriter competition encourages and facilitates through songwriting. Every young person has something to say, a story to tell, or a message to share – that’s why Song Academy is so important to our community.”
“Song Academy is a dynamic, supportive and excellent nurturing ground for young talent. The songs that come through the Academy are far ranging and above all, show that the Academy give young creators the confidence to realise their own natural inspiration.”
