Summer 2025 residential songwriting camps

Creativity, Collaboration & Confidence in Full Harmony!

The Song Academy residential summer songwriting camps 2025 were an unforgettable celebration of creativity, collaboration and musical discovery! Over four incredible days, young songwriters from across the UK (and beyond!) came together to write, perform and produce their own original songs — supported by a team of professional songwriters, producers and mentors who guided them every step of the way.

From the moment the first chords were strummed to the final showcase performances, the camps buzzed with energy, laughter and inspiration. The atmosphere was electric — a perfect blend of learning, experimentation and pure joy for making music together.

As well as the songwriting camp in Surrey (in its 3rd year) with 50 aspiring young songwriters, we launched a songwriting camp in North Yorkshire with 22 aspiring young songwriters!

Crafting Songs with Heart and Purpose

Each day began with creative workshops designed to spark ideas and strengthen songwriting skills. Our sessions on creating song concepts and understanding song structure encouraged participants to think deeply about the stories they wanted to tell. From there, we explored creative lyric writing, helping everyone find their own unique voice and message.

Music That Moves — Chords, Melody & Harmony

Musicians stretched their creative muscles in chord, melody and harmony improvisation sessions, discovering the power of musical storytelling. With some hands-on music theory and group jam sessions, young songwriters learned how to craft memorable hooks and emotive progressions that made their songs truly shine.

Finding Your Sound & Bringing Songs to Life

Our workshops on developing your sound and style gave participants the tools to express their individuality, while the recording and production sessions let them experience the magic of turning ideas into fully produced tracks. Watching songs evolve from notebook scribbles to polished recordings was one of the highlights of the week!

Performance, Community & Confidence

Music is meant to be shared, and our choir and band sessions brought everyone together to create powerful, collaborative performances. Whether singing harmonies or playing instruments, every participant had the chance to shine.

Evenings were packed with connection and fun — from our lively open mic/songwriter night to the legendary quiz night, where friendships flourished and laughter filled the air.

Learning from the Best

The VIP Professional Songwriters Night was an unforgettable experience — participants had the rare opportunity to ask questions and gain insider knowledge from acclaimed songwriters and producers working in today’s industry. Masterclasses on song production, chord progressions, melody improvisation and lyrical development added a professional edge, inspiring everyone to take their songwriting to the next level.

The Grand Finale — Showcase Performances

The camps concluded with the end-of-camp showcase, where each group took to the stage to perform their original songs. The performances were nothing short of extraordinary — bursting with authenticity, courage and passion. Family, friends and mentors watched with pride as our young songwriters poured their hearts into every note.

A Community of Young Creators

More than just a camp, each Song Academy Summer Residential camp 2025 was a community — a place where young people discovered their voices, formed lasting friendships and found confidence through creativity.

Summer Camps 2025 participants commented:

“It’s amazing to be around people who love songwriting as much as I do. I’ve learned so much — not just about music, but about believing in myself.” Tom (16 years old)

“It was an amazing experience and an incredible opportunity! Just spending time with people who had the same dream as me was so special. I will cherish the friends and memories I have made forever. Thank you for such a wonderful time” Eryn (13 years old)

“The BEST part of my summer!!  The highlight!” Lilia (13 years old)

“It was so useful and I enjoyed every moment of it. I learned more about the industry and songwriting in general as well as making life long friends who I can collaborate with in the future.” Izzy (16 years old)

“I loved all the people and the creatives that I met at song academy the energy was amazing, such a breath of fresh air” Elizabeth (17 years old)

The future of music is bright — and it’s being written right here at Song Academy.

Emily Phillips, songwriter and lead judge of The Young Songwriter 2025 competition said “This year just under a 1,000 songs were submitted to the Young Songwriter Competition 2025. It has been a total pleasure to come across new talent and some great songs from young songwriters in the UK and around the world. The process of judging is not an absolute or determining factor in the value of a song – The Beatles were turned down 5 times by record labels before landing a deal!

That said, we try to be as rigorous as possible in deciding which songs are selected. Concepts, lyrics, melody, structure, originality and harmony are some of the aspects that we listen out for, but also, sometimes simply the X factor, which is a mysterious indefinable quality a song can have. In other words, in some cases, a hunch or a feeling might be what persuades us to choose one song over another.”

Official sponsors of The Song Academy Young Songwriter 2025 competition are Spotify, YouTube Music, PRS for Music, Focusrite, Soundtrap and ICMP.

What Young Songwriter judges and partners say about the importance of The Young Songwriter competition:

For the writers whose songs did not make the top 30, your creativity and input to the competition is so valued.

In other words, in some cases, a hunch or a feeling might be what persuades us to choose one song over another.

I’m happy to see that lots of songs this year have been written in collaboration with other songwriters. Professional songwriters nearly always collaborate. The average number of writers on top 10 hits in the US is around 6. That goes some way to revealing how much brain power can be needed to write about love in a way that hasn’t been said before.

The Song Academy is the world’s leading platform in nurturing young songwriters to express themselves. I encourage all budding songwriters to write as much as possible. Great songs come in mysterious ways that we can’t fully control. Sometimes there is a magic and mystery at play when songwriting. The best songwriting sessions come when honesty and playfulness are combined with integrity. Be your own critic and edit! Also remember, when writing, there are no bad ideas. In other words, allow the creativity to flow before judging.

One more thing! John Lennon said all ideas are universally available. We as writers are simply the vehicles to access them.”

The Young Songwriter 2025 competition attracted a diverse group of aspiring young songwriters. 75% of entries were from across the UK/Ireland (60% outside of London) and 25% from around the world – from Shanghai, Delhi, Melbourne and Istanbul to Mexico, Los Angeles, Toronto and Cape Town. Gender breakdown was: 70% of entrants were girls, 23% boys, 6% who have a unique gender identification.  Age breakdown was: 31% aged 8-12, 34% aged 13-15, 18% aged 16-18 and 16% aged 19-22.

The Benefits of Songwriting for Youth: Empowering Young Voices Through Music

At Song Academy, we believe in the amazing power of music to help young people discover their voices, express their emotions, and build a strong sense of self and community. Songwriting isn’t just about lyrics and melodies – it’s about finding an outlet for self-expression and boosting your mental wellbeing, especially when the world feels overwhelming.

Did you know that one in five young people in England experience mental health challenges? According to the NHS Mental Health of Children and Young People in England 2023 report, one in five children and young people in England aged eight to 25 had a probable mental disorder that year. With pressures from social media, climate change fears, and the cost of living crisis, young people are facing unique challenges.

That’s where songwriting comes in! It offers them a creative way to process emotions, share stories, and feel empowered through music. Read on to learn more about how songwriting can benefit UK’s children, teens and youth.

Mental Health Challenges Among UK Youth

The mental health statistics for young people in the UK are eye-opening*:

  • 20.3% of 8-16 year olds were diagnosed with a probable mental disorder in 2023
  • 23.3% of 17-19 year olds were similarly affected
  • 21.7% of 20-25 year olds also reported mental health issues

Since then, social media pressure, global politics, and the rising cost of living haven’t made things any easier, have they?

Unfortunately, NHS mental health services are under strain, which means professional help isn’t always available when you need it. What’s more, studies have shown that many young adults in the UK don’t seek out mental-health support when they need it. This is where songwriting can make a real difference as a DIY therapeutic tool to share your feelings and shake off your worries through the feel-good act of expressing yourself musically.

Youth Music’s 2023 Self-Expression report showed 93% of young people DO treat music lyrics as a “therapeutic tool” when struggling with their mental health. In the study, 73% of those aged 16-24 said lyrics help them process difficult feelings, and 54% believe writing or listening to music lessens feelings of isolation.

Songwriting: Your Creative Outlet

Songwriting can be an incredibly powerful way for you to express your emotions, connect with others, and get through difficult times. Whether you’re writing about sadness, anger, hopes, or dreams, songwriting gives you a safe space to explore – and release − complex emotions.

In our blog about how writing songs boosts mental health, we shared these words by music therapist Barbara Dunn: “songwriting is a way to give voice to the essence of who we are.” When you write music, you create space for self-reflection and personal growth, helping you discover more about who you really are.

Even if you’re new to it, the act of songwriting itself has a cathartic effect, allowing you to process thoughts and feelings in a creative, structured way that offers a sense of relief.

How Songwriting Can Benefit Your Mind

Express Yourself!

Feeling anxious, sad, or frustrated? Expressing these emotions can be hard, but songwriting provides an important outlet. By writing music and lyrics, you can let out complex feelings in a healthy way, reducing emotional struggles.

Discover Who You Are

The songwriting process requires you to look inward, helping you better understand your personal journey. This self-awareness is key during your teen years and young adulthood, as you explore your sense of identity through music.

Boost Your Creativity

One of the most exciting aspects of songwriting is the chance to get creative! You’ll experiment with words, rhythms, and melodies, enhancing your creative thinking and problem-solving skills. The best part? There are no ‘wrong answers’ in songwriting – it’s all about finding your unique voice.

Train Your Brain

When you compose lyrics, you’re engaging your mind in ways that improve your vocabulary, memory, and language skills. This creative exercise can also improve problem-solving skills, as you organise your thoughts and emotions, make connections and experiment with new ways to communicate. These benefits can carry over to school and other areas of your life.

Reduce Stress

The act of making music can be meditative, lowering stress levels by taking your mind off outside pressures like school or family dynamics. The rhythmic nature of music has a calming effect on your brain, helping to lessen anxiety.

Build Your Confidence

Completing a song − especially one that resonates with you − can significantly boost your self-esteem. Remember: every song you write is an achievement to be proud of! Plus, sharing your song with others – whether on a stage or in a competition – develops confidence as you overcome the nerves to showcase your unique talents.

Connect With Others

Group songwriting is an excellent chance to collaborate, communicate, and develop social skills. Writing songs together encourages teamwork and helps you build strong bonds with musical peers. Our songwriting workshops create supportive environments where you’ll feel heard, valued, and understood.

Practice Mindfulness

The focused nature of songwriting promotes mindfulness by requiring attention to detail. Songwriting sessions encourage you to be present in the moment, which improves focus and enhances your ability to regulate your emotions.

Develop Resilience

The process of creating a song involves trial and error when figuring out lyrics, melodies, and arrangements. As you learn to persevere through challenges and stay adaptable, you grow your grit. Important tip: some of the best songs come after multiple revisions!

How Songwriting Helps You at Different Stages

For Teens: Find Your Self

Songwriting is a valuable way to explore who you are and develop a clearer sense of self. Writing about your personal experiences and emotions helps you understand yourself better, which leads to stronger independence and self-expression.

For Those Facing Mental Health Challenges: Find Relief

Are you dealing with depression, anxiety, or stress? Songwriting can be a vital tool. By writing a song, you can process feelings, and feel heard and understood. This practice can complement any professional support you may be getting.

For Students: Improve Your Focus

Engaging in the art of songwriting enhances focus and concentration. The skills you learn while writing lyrics and music can improve your academic performance by boosting your problem-solving abilities and encouraging attention to detail.

For Young Activists: Express Your Concerns

Do you feel strongly about issues like feminism, climate change, mental health, or social justice? Songwriting provides an avenue for expressing these concerns, helping you become an active participant in social change.

For Everyone: Experience Achievement

Writing an original song gives you a sense of accomplishment that encourages you to keep pursuing your artistic dreams. This gives you purpose and meaning.

Best Songwriting Tips from Top Musicians

Ever felt like songwriting is this amazing mystery just waiting to be solved? In many ways, it is! Clues can come from all directions, and the answers seem to reveal themselves when you’re least expecting it.

The best part? There’s no rulebook you need to follow. There’s no rule − the best songs come from your own ideas and heart, and songwriting should be about having fun and experimenting. That said, advice from seasoned songwriters can act as helpful signposts along your songwriting journey. Whether you’re just starting to explore your musical voice or you’ve been crafting songs for years, these tips from some of the world’s top musicians will help take your songwriting to the next level.

7 Ways to Find Inspiration

Let’s start with the big question – where do great songs come from? The answer is… everywhere! Creativity is not about waiting for the ‘perfect’ moment to be inspired. It’s about being open to everything around you, all of the time.

1. Listen Widely

The most creative songwriters don’t stick to just one playlist. Take Billie Eilish. She grew up being exposed to a diverse range of genres, soaking in everything from classic rock to electronic beats. Now, her music is wonderfully unique because of it. So don’t just listen to your go-to genres – explore widely and let different sounds spark new ideas. You’ll be amazed at what happens when you start writing without limiting your options. Writing songs in different styles can broaden your creativity.

2. Pay Attention

When asked where she gets inspiration from, American rapper Doja Cat said: “I really pull from everyone. I’m absorbent.” You should be, too. Your next hit song could be hiding in a random conversation, a feeling you can’t shake, a poem, or even in a single word that catches your attention. Keep your eyes and ears open to the world around you.

3. Stay Curious

Curiosity is closely linked to creativity, and it’s your secret weapon as a songwriter. As singer-songwriter Aaron Espe puts it, “Curiosity is my compass.” When you stay interested in everything around you, song ideas will find you when you least expect them. The songwriting process often starts with curiosity, so don’t be afraid to see what comes.

4. Write What You Know

This common advice given to writers of all kinds applies to songwriting, too. Some of the most powerful songs come straight from real life. Taylor Swift, for example, has admitted this, saying: “My experience with songwriting is usually so confessional, it’s drawn from my own life and my own stories.” Personal experiences can shape your song in ways that others can relate to, so don’t shy away from writing about your life experiences – that raw honesty will resonate with others.

5. Be Authentic

When you’re writing, there’s no need to mould your style into that of someone else. As legendary songwriter Bob Dylan said: “All I can be is me.” You do you. Your unique voice is what’ll make your music stand out. Remember, there’s no rule − you can follow your own structured songwriting process and find your voice.

6. Go With the Flow

Sometimes, forcing creativity doesn’t work. If the mood doesn’t feel right, step away for a bit and return when it does. The songwriting tips from the pros suggest giving yourself the freedom to let ideas flow naturally.

7. Start With a Spark

Having a clear idea of what you want your song to say can be the perfect starting point. Begin with a message, a story, or even just a feeling you want to express, and let everything else build from there. Some successful songwriters recommend starting with the lyrics first, as this gives you a foundation to build the rest of your song. Whether you start with the lyrics or the main melody, trust the process.

Songwriting Techniques: 10 Tips

Now let’s get into the “how” of songwriting with these practical tips and exercises.

1. Learn from the Greats

One of the best ways to develop your skills is to study the songs you love. Try analysing and breaking down your favourite tracks. What makes them work? What chord progressions do they use? How do the lyrics flow with the melody? Understanding these elements will level up your own writing. Look at history’s greatest songs for inspiration.

2. Write Daily

Songwriting is like a muscle – the more you use it, the stronger it gets! Ed Sheeran didn’t become a songwriting superstar overnight. He has spoken about how he committed to writing one song a day, at first. Now, he writes at least three songs per day, but often it’s more like four or five. Make songwriting a daily habit, even if it’s just for 15 minutes. Start with the simplest form of your song and build from there.

3. Practice with Purpose

Don’t just write randomly – practice with intention! Focus on improving specific aspects of your craft each time you sit down to write. Maybe today you’ll work on creating catchier choruses, and tomorrow you’ll experiment with new chord progressions.

4. Don’t Discount the Demo

A demo is just a quick, raw version of your song – but it can become something huge. Did you know Adele’s demo for “Rolling in the Deep” ended up being the final version? So, always record your ideas, even if they’re rough. That initial spark often has something magical that can’t be recreated. When writing lyrics, don’t worry about making them perfect on the first try – just get them down and build the rest around it.

5. Jot it Down

You never know when a brilliant idea will pop into your head. This is why all writers should have a notebook or phone handy to make notes. Record anything that might contribute to a good song – interesting phrases, random thoughts, or cool rhymes. You never know − these little snippets could become the memorable lyrics for your next hit!

6. Access Your Subconscious

To be creative, tap into your subconscious mind. One technique is stream-of-consciousness writing. Basically, you write without stopping or editing for 10 minutes straight. Just let your mind wander and allow whatever comes to mind flow onto the page. This tried technique can unlock lyrical ideas you didn’t even know you had.

7. Don’t Get Stuck in Your Head

Overthinking can be the enemy of creativity. As Arctic Monkeys’ Alex Turner says, “If anyone asks me about songwriting, I guess I’d say that you just gotta do it.” Sometimes you need to stop analysing and just write!

8. First Draft, Then Craft

Few songs (if any) will be perfect straight away. Writing your first song? Don’t be afraid to write a messy first draft – the real magic happens when you start refining and rewriting. Give yourself permission to polish your songs over time.

9. Find Your Focus Zone

You’ll need a distraction-free environment when you’re writing. To improve your songwriting, put your phone on silent, find a quiet space, and let your creativity flow without interruptions.

10. Create a Dedicated Songwriting Space

If you can, create a space that will support you while you’re learning how to write a song. Billy Joel – one of the world’s greatest songwriters −once said, “I find I write best when I sit myself down, have a coffee, go into wherever my space is.” Having a dedicated spot for songwriting can help signal to your brain that it’s time to create.

Harness the Power of Collaboration

Two heads (or more) can be better than one when it comes to songwriting. We’ve found this to be true in our summer camps and songwriting workshops. So…

Team Up

Working with others can push your creativity in exciting new directions. Tor Erik Hermansen, from Norwegian songwriting duo Stargate, recommends you “Work with new people, keep it fun, and collaborate with those who have exciting ideas.” You could even have a songwriting party and get creative with other musical friends.

Seek Feedback

Don’t be afraid to share your songs and ask for honest feedback. As Beck says, “I enjoy the collaboration. I always envied people in bands who got to have that interaction.” Fresh ears can help you spot both the strengths and weaknesses in your songs.

Crafting Your Song Structure

Choose Your Blueprint

Understanding different song structures (like verse-chorus-verse or AABA) gives you a framework to build upon. Each section has a job to do – verses tell the story, choruses deliver your main message, and bridges offer a new perspective.

Make Melody King

Your melody is what people will remember long after your song ends. So focus on creating melodies that feel natural and are easy to sing along to. These are the ones that stick in people’s heads!

Harmonise Words and Music

Your lyrics should feel like they were made for your melody. When the words and music fit together perfectly, singing your song will feel as natural as speaking.

Start With the Hook

Many hitmakers, including OneRepublic’s Ryan Tedder, suggest starting with your chorus. Once you’ve got that killer hook, the rest of the song often falls into place much more easily. These lyrics are arguably your best way to begin.

Repeat, But With a Twist

Repetition in songs makes a big difference in helping listeners connect with the music. Just make sure to add small variations each time to keep things interesting.

Breaking Through Writer’s Block

Feeling stuck? It happens! Here’s how to get unstuck:

Change Your Scenery

As we’ve said, if the words just aren’t coming, don’t force things. Go for a walk, listen to some music, or do something completely different. Sometimes your best ideas appear when you’re not trying so hard.

Call in Backup

Collaborating can be the perfect cure for writer’s block. Having someone else in the room brings new energy and fresh perspectives that might be just what you need to break through.

Try a New Perspective

If you’re stuck writing from your own point of view, try writing from someone else’s shoes. This empathy switch can open up completely new directions for your song. Experiment with how lyrics come when you approach songwriting from a different angle.

Learn from Mistakes

The late Johnny Cash had the perfect advice for dealing with setbacks: “You build on failure. You use it as a stepping stone.” Don’t get discouraged if things aren’t working out right away – every attempt teaches you something valuable.

Conclusion

The most important thing to remember? Songwriting takes practice, and the only way to get better is to keep writing. Don’t be afraid to experiment, step outside your comfort zone, and find what works for you. The journey of becoming a successful songwriter starts with writing songs that are uniquely yours.
